Nyra Medical (formerly MitraPlug) has created a catheter-plug technology for repairing a leaky mitral valve in the heart.
This adjustable device needs only a two-inch surgical incision and can be inserted directly into the heart. Then the cardiologist can use the catheter to adjust the size and position of the plug to correct the leakage. When correctly fitted, the catheter is removed, and the incision is closed, leaving only a small scar.
The device is superior to existing technologies. Some existing mitral valve repair methods don’t allow adequate adjustments, so patients may continue to suffer leakage even after the surgery; other methods require open heart surgery, with all the attending complications.
Around 830,000 people in the U.S. and Europe could benefit from the MitraPlug technology. The percutaneous mitral valve repair market is valued at $3.3 billion in the U.S. and Europe, with an annual projected growth rate of 21 percent.
