Synthetic Genomics Inc. (SGI), located in La Jolla, CA, is a leader in the field of synthetic biology. Synthetic biology is at the intersection of biology and engineering, requiring the integration of evolutionary, molecular, and systems biology, biophysics, machine learning, and genetic engineering. Synthetic Genomics utilizes its foundational intellectual property in this rapidly evolving field in combination with expertise in core disciplines such as bio-discovery, -informatics, and -processing, software engineering, analytical chemistry, fermentation, and advanced cell engineering, to design and build biological systems to solve global sustainability challenges.

SGI provides solutions to three markets; research, bioproduction and applied products. Its research segment is focused on genomics solutions for academic and commercial R&D organizations. The commercial products and services include instrumentation, reagents, DNA synthesis services, and bioinformatics services and software. In 2015, the company launched the BioXP 3200 system, the world’s first benchtop “DNA printer” that produces high quality DNA fragments on demand.

SGI’s efforts in bio-based production are targeted at improving existing biological production hosts and developing entirely new synthetic production hosts with the goal of more efficient production of pharmaceuticals, vaccines, nutritionals, and bio-industrial products derived from renewable biological resources or producing entirely new products.

SGI pursues its applied products typically in partnership with leading global organizations across a variety of industries. Examples include sustainable bio-fuels (Exxon), insect resistant crops (Monsanto), nutritional supplements (ADM), vaccines (GSK, Seqirus), and transplantable organs (United Therapeutics).
