Volpini Verpackungen is a long-established Austrian family business headquartered in Spittal an der Drau (Carinthia). Founded in 1906, the company has specialised in the production of high-quality plastic packaging since 1970. Its core offering centres on packaging cups (notably yoghurt, dessert and convenience cups) and thermoformed film for the food industry. Vertically integrated manufacturing “Made in Austria”, encompassing in-house tooling, thermoforming and printing capabilities, enables a high degree of flexibility in shape, size, decoration and material specification, creating a competitive advantage in a structurally margin-sensitive market.
The product portfolio comprises four core lines:
▪ Desto Cup, a sustainable premium line featuring a cardboard outer sleeve and a PP inner cup: up to 40-60% less plastic used, mono-material recyclability of up to 98%, an optional viewing window, interior printing and a tear perforation for straightforward separation of materials
▪ Thermoformed cups in numerous standard and bespoke formats for dairy, convenience and fresh produce applications
▪ Thermoformed film as an intermediate product for the downstream food and packaging industry
▪ Finishing and decoration through in-mould labelling, offset printing and bespoke design solutions
In terms of end markets, Volpini primarily serves dairies, fruit and dessert producers, convenience food and ready-meal manufacturers, as well as the muesli and breakfast category. Reference clients include mymuesli, among others.
Ownership structure and transaction history: Following the founding family’s complete withdrawal, Volpini was initially transferred to the private equity firm FINEXX as part of a structured succession arrangement, with DI Franz Leichtfried assuming management responsibility from 1 April 2022. In 2023, the company was fully acquired by FOSTEC Ventures GmbH and RWD Unternehmensbeteiligungen GmbH. The shareholder structure has since been organised as a holding architecture:
▪ Volpini Holding GmbH as the parent entity of the two wholly-owned subsidiaries
▪ Volpini Real Estate GmbH, holding the operating site and buildings (asset holding company)
▪ Volpini Verpackungen Austria GmbH as the operating production company
This structure allows for a clean separation between the operating business and the real estate asset base, creating strategic flexibility for the further development of both value levers. The operating entity, Volpini Verpackungen GmbH, currently employs around 60 people and is positioning itself consistently towards sustainable packaging solutions that already address forthcoming regulatory requirements (the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), recyclability and plastic reduction).
